MENTAL HEALTH FITNESS FOR WORK

When an employer becomes concerned that an employee may be incapable of performing his or her job, one response is a formal evaluation of the employee’s “fitness for work (FFW)”.  Most refer to physical abilities where a certificate for fitness for work is undertaken by a medical professional. At Lifeskills Australia Psychology & Counselling, we have skilled professionals who can evaluate a client’s mental and psychological state in order to determine their ability to perform their job effectively and safely.

 

WHAT IS A FITNESS FOR WORK ASSESSMENT?

Sometimes personal traits, disorders, or stress reactions are causing or contributing to problem behaviour or substandard performance.  In addition to the usual channels of review, coaching, counseling, and discipline – a formal mental health fitness for work (FFW) evaluation may be ordered to (1) determine if you are psychologically capable of remaining in your job; (2) if not, then what measures, if any, are recommended to make you more effective and able to function up to the standards of the employer; and (3) what kinds of reasonable accommodations, if any, must be in place to permit you to work.  Specifically, the Fitness for Work Assessment will provide a plan for how to optimally transition an employee back to work in line with any medical guidelines or restrictions.

The assessment will help to determine your employee’s capacity to perform their role, including the mental and cognitive requirements of their job. Of course, the first priority in the assessment is to prevent injury or harm to the returning employee and aid a smooth and lasting return to work.

Your employee’s Fitness for Work Assessment involves a two-hour interview either face to face or on a suitable web platform. A Fitness for Work Certificate will be provided followed up by a report which will be sent to you and your employee if required.

 

HOW DOES THE FITNESS FOR DUTIES ASSESSMENT SUPPORT YOUR STAFF?

Working with a neutral and independent consultant can greatly assist employees who may have barriers or fears about returning to work after a protracted absence from work with mental health issues, illness or injury. It also can aid any liaison that may be required with treating practitioners who are often pivotal in determining timing of the return to work and support of the associated transition plan.

 

HOW CAN YOUR STAFF ACCESS THIS SERVICE?

All clients accessing a Fitness for Work Assessment will need to be referred by their employer. All staff attendance and participation in this service is voluntary and underpinned by necessary consenting provisions at the time of referral.  Please request your referral form from info@lifeskillsaustralia.com.au
